Character: Magilou Mayvin
Canon: Tales of Berseria. Post-Canon
Age: Late 20s- I'll say 29
Background Information: Wiki Link
Personality:
As a child prodigy who was once trained to be a legate, Magilou is actually quite intelligent. She can be quite shrewd and cunning, but she also hides her intellect. She can still act quite witty, while dumbing down the things she knows and only mentioning them at points when they need to come out. For example, Magilou only explains malevolence after the group freed a therion and witnessed the resulting outbreak of 'daemonblight' or malevolence. Magilou often acts in a chaotic and impulsive manner, though there's often hidden motives behind her seemingly impulsive actions.
Magilou talks a lot. She can tend to describe many things in a dramatic manner, with a lot of flourish. She has a strong sense of showmanship and tends to display a strong ego, often overplaying all of her attributes, from her skill as an apparent witch to her beauty and how young she is. Many of the things she says are half-truths, embellishments or outright lies. She often avoids telling the truth in to cover up private things she doesn't want to talk about, such as her past or her feelings. The way she describes herself as a witch is key to this, as she covers up being a former legate and uses witch-related matters to cover up aspects of her past, such as claiming that she met Grimoirh at a witch academy when she actually took her in after she was abandoned by Melchior. Some of her excuses are more mundane, such as when she tried to hide that she was just brutally tortured by claiming that she just had to endure a very boring conversation. She also made up an excessively long and whimsical name for herself while covering up her 'real' name from her early life - Magillanica Lou Mayvin, though she has ultimately ended up accepting the Mayvin name for herself.
Despite her attempts to hide it, Magilou's past has shaped her. Her parents abandoned her, and she was raised in a circus that abused her. With Melchior, she had something that she saw as a family for the first time, but it came with the incredible pressure of living up to his impossible expectations, which ultimately broke her. This seems to have shaped her into the rebel she currently is, as she delights in messing with Melchior's plans in retaliation for what happened in her childhood. Despite this, she still seems to have some sympathy for Magilou. In one skit, she questions Velvet about her burning hatred for Artorius as if it is something that she is incapable of feeling, with it ultimately feeling as if she is trying to live vicariously through her level of hatred, which itself implies that she does not feel that extreme of emotion towards Melchior. It is also notable that, as said above, she accepts the Mayvin name, and in one sidequest she helps the similarly-named Majelu to reconcile with her mentor, as she may have seen them as a relatively less unhealthy version of her and Melchior. Ultimately, Melchior is someone who Magilou resents, but also feels complicated feelings about how close they were to becoming family.
She seems to relish in teasing others and pushing their buttons. This is evident in her interactions with almost everyone, but especially Laphicet. She often teases him about his crushes or makes up scary stories in order to scare him. Magilou still has her limits, as there are instances where even she is taken aback by some of Velvet's blunt comments towards Laphicet, and on one occasion where Velvet is brutal about the boy's friend's chances of survival, Magilou notes even she would not say something that harsh. She ultimately does have a protective side that is rarely shown and is capable of giving genuine pep talks. In other instances, she tries to hide her emotions behind jokes. One recurring instance is how Magilou makes a set of bets throughout the game about Velvet breaking, and she cites these bets as her reason for staying around. Her final bet seems to be her way of telling Velvet that she wants her to survive and thus cares for her, all done in the guise of a bet about not getting eaten by Innominat. She apparently has a love of gambling, even if some of it is an excuse to stick around with Velvet's group.
At the same time, her relationship with Bienfu is also notable in that Magilou tends to be cruel and abusive towards the Normin. She often makes fun of him, attacks him, puts harsh tasks on him or uses him as some sort of test dummy. Her mistreatment of him even drove him to betray her. They are still capable of working together effectively as a team, which was most clearly demonstrated at the end of the comedy act sidequests, in which the two of them worked together efficiently to prepare for a comedy show together. She did also give him a true name that means 'Cute Hat', although she later tried to cover up that sincerity by claiming that the name means 'Thing'. She ultimately does seem to care about Bienfu more than she lets on, especially considering that he was her earliest friend, but she trends towards being mean to the Normin.
Magilou is ultimately a strong believer in free will, which is part of her motivation in helping Velvet's party. This is also connected to her idea that things should be interesting and not boring. A world without free will sounds too boring to her, and so she rails against Artorious's vision of a controlled world, even if that causes her to be considered 'evil'. In her most sincere moments, she speaks passionately of the flaws in people and nature, as that's what makes them what they are, and it's the way they should remain. She could even be referring to herself, who was ultimately too flawed to properly be Melchior's daughter, and in turn she asserts her value as a person. Her need for entertainment is reflected in her choice of occupation, as she runs a show of magic and comedy to entertain the masses.
Abilities & Inventory: Virtually all of Magilou's magical abilities are actually channeled through the Malak known as Bienfu, who primarily channels his abilities through Guardians, which are paper dolls that Magilou wields. As an alternative with Bienfu's absence, Magilou will practice to replicate those abilities through dreamotion. Here is a listing of the artes she learns in the game. The dreamotion variants will be weaker recreations of them.
In terms of her inventory, she will bring her Guardians with her, including one that can turn into a giant card that she can ride through the air like a hoverboard, which will also be fueled by dreamotion. She will also have a small book that she writes in.
Suitability & Plans:
It seemed like a good idea at the time?
Honestly, she feels like a good fit for the game. She's someone who can roll with a lot of the wilder dream aspects of the game, and as said above she will get on top of learning dreamotion as a new source of power in this world. With her talkative nature, she can engage with pretty much anyone instead of sticking to one social circle. And as she's smarter than she lets on, she will be doing many things out of curiosity and can dig into plots if they manage to get her invested. In playing her in this setting, I hope to explore Magilou figuring out a new purpose outside of the context of her original world and the mission she was part of there with Velvet's crew. At the same time, I do like having her confront her pre-existing issues and the ghosts of her past. This setting will make it easier for her to focus on entertaining others, and I do wonder if she'll end up with a new cause to follow on top of that. Generally, she seems like a fun force of chaos to unleash upon the game with her own host of issues.
